Rules of Blackjack
Blackjack is one of the most popular games that can be found in a casino. When entering a casino for the first time it can be very daunting, which is why it’s often best to have read up on the rules of a game before going to the chosen establishment.
If blackjack is being played at a casino, it is often played at various tables throughout the room. This is due to the tables having minimum and maximum amounts of bets that can be placed there.
The idea of the game is to create a hand value that is closer to 21 than the dealer’s hand. Effectively the player is playing against the dealer at all times, if the players hand exceeds a total of 21 then they are bust and out of the game. If the player is playing a shoe game in a casino which is where 6 to 8 decks of cards are used and the cards are all dealt face up, the player can ask questions to the dealer who will be able to help them with the rules of the game. However, the rules of the game state that the players do not handle the cards that are dealt to them unless they are playing in a hand-held game.
When trying to reach to maximum total of 21, the cards have values that are represented by the Ace counting as either a 1 or 11. The cards from 2 through to 9 represent each individual number. The 10, Jack, Queen and King all count as 10 points. When being dealt the cards, the individual suits do not have any meaning; therefore, it is only the values that count towards the total. If an Ace is dealt, the player does not have to specify which value they want the Ace to be. The dealer will always assume the Ace will be the value that best represents their total. A hand that contains an Ace is sometimes referred to as a “Soft” total if it can be used as a 1 or 11 without the players hand exceeding 21.
As a general rule in casinos, the dealer will continue to take cards until their total score is at least 17 or greater. An Ace card in the dealers hand is always counted as 11 which differs to the players rule on the Ace. Once the dealer has reached a minimum of 17, they can stop playing and wait for the player to try to reach 21.
When playing the game, a “Blackjack” or “Natural” can be gained from the first two cards dealt. This is where the player can score 21 with the first two cards by using an Ace as 11 and a ten valued card together. These two cards have to be the first two cards to qualify for a “Blackjack” or “Natural”, this title won’t be given to a player where the 21 total is reached by split cards.
The real decision to be made when playing Blackjack is whether to draw another card from the dealer or to stop. If the player decides to stop playing as they believe they have a good score, they must wait for the dealer to show their hand before showing theirs. If the player has exceeded the 21 total and is bust, the cards are cleared and a new game will commence.
